Brick Lane painting sold for £3000
Roger’s Brick Lane painting was sold last night following an exciting auction by Sotherby’s. Grouped with Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers’ works as the climax to the event, Roger’s painting achieved the top price of the evening for the second year running. The auction and exhibition were held at the Granary, Central St. Martins, Kings Cross.

Brick Lane for Article 25
After Holborn Circus in London’s West End last year, this year Article 25 asked me to paint Brick Lane: my contribution to their 10×10 “drawing the city” fund-raising event, this time in the East End.
What a great subject! Full of colour, smells and music, the place buzzes with life on a Sunday afternoon. The spicy rich complexity of the food is echoed by the strong red weathered brickwork.
As well as acrylic paint and black ink I have incorporated collage into the image: the cover and some pages from Monica Ali’s book “Brick Lane”; some menus and tickets from the area; some wooden cutlery from the market; a palette knife broken in making the picture and a blade – representing the sharp edginess of the place.
